Finding a Postdoc Position and Getting the Most Out of It

Time:  10:40-11:40am
Room: 26 Wellman

How does one find a post doc position?  Is it who you know or what you know?  Is the process different for finding an academic post doc versus one in industry?  Join our panelists for an explanation of the postdoc search process and tips on how to get the most out of your postdoc experience while avoiding potential pitfalls.

Panelists:

Abhinav Bhushan, Ph.D., Chair, Postdoctoral Scholars Association, Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering
Abhinav Bhushan joined Dr. Cristina Davis’ lab UC Davis as a postdoc in July 2007. Prior to that, he was working as a Research Associate at the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices, Louisiana State University. During the time at LSU, Abhinav also pursued his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 2006. His dissertation work was to develop fast and miniaturized gas chromatography systems. At UC Davis, Abhinav is involved with interdisciplinary research to develop bioinstrumentation for clinical diagnostics and novel techniques to realize metallic nanostructures. He is the current Chair of the Postdoctoral Scholars Association (PSA) at UC Davis. Abhinav is also a part of the Laboratory Management Institute’s class of 2008. Abhinav has worked in the private sector and the academia. He intends to pursue an academic career and develop a successful research program. Abhinav likes to learn about the intricacies of the financial markets, and enjoys traveling and visiting his wife, Teesta, who is currently finishing her Ph.D. at LSU.

Rita Mehta, Ph.D., Secretary/Treasurer, Postdoctoral Scholars Association, Postdoctoral Scholar, Evolution & Ecology
Rita Mehta is the Secretary/Treasurer for the Postdoctoral Scholars Association and is a postdoctoral researcher in the Section of Evolution & Ecology. Dr. Mehta received her doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in August 2005 and joined the Wainwright Lab in September 2005. In 2006, she was supported by a fellowship from the Association of American University Women (AAUW) which enabled her to pursue her own research interests. In the Wainwright Lab, Rita studies the feeding behavior and physiology of moray eels. Her research has both a laboratory and field component.

Rita Mehta has had the experience of teaching many biology courses to both majors and non-majors at the University level. She has also been an adjunct faculty member at two different junior colleges. Although she enjoys teaching college courses, she has really valued her time as a research scientist and has had many opportunities to mentor undergraduate students on research projects.
